If you’re a college student approaching graduation, the prospect of looking for your first job in the “real world” can be kind of intimidating, especially in today’s tough market. Sure, you’ve spent years amassing fine academic credentials, internships and campus activities. But how do you package up all that experience and make it speak for you in a way that perks up the ears of potential employers? Well, you start with a killer resume.

The experiences you highlight, the format and layout you use, your word choices, and attention to spelling and grammar speak volumes about you and the value that you can bring to a company. So you’ve got to make sure your resume is saying all the right things.

To help you do just that, we’ve created an Office Live Workspace page on Facebook just for college students. We’ve loaded it up with tips, advice, resume templates, videos and more from great resources like Monster.com, the Microsoft Office Online Career Center, the hiring experts at Microsoft Recruiting, and top industry experts – and we’re adding more every week.

In addition, today we’re launching the My Resume Talks Sweepstakes. Just enter your name and email address for your chance to win* a consultation from a Certified and Professional Resume Specialist. There will be 500 total winners so your odds are pretty good. You can enter once per day until May 4th.

Lastly, if you’re a fan of Kevin Connolly, who plays Eric on the hit show Entourage, make sure you watch this hilarious video telling students how to create a resume that gets a recruiter’s attention!

Good Luck!

David Alexander

I won one of the prizes in this sweeps - it was pretty useless.  All they do is send a few strengths/weaknesses - they don't actually make the edits to your resume.  As a freelance writer (B.A. in English, Phi Beta Kappa, published author...and yes, I have edited resume for money!), I can tell you one simple fact: it is much, much easier for the person you are helping if you simply EDIT their resume, rather than spend 15 minutes typing what it wrong with it.  Show, don't tell....that type of thing.  The other part of it is simply intention: by just sending in suggested changes and concepts, you force the reader to go back and forth with the resume and make the edits, while reading and returning to the 'resume consultation' to make sure all the points were covered, that the reader understands your intentions, etc....it's ridiculously time-consuming.

Hi BettyKat,

Sorry to hear you were not pleased with the resume consultation you received through the My Resume Talks sweepstakes. Our intentions with the resume consultations were to provide you with guidance and feedback from a certified resume expert, not necesarily to re-write the resume for you.  We've found that this approach was very helpful for the majority of our swwepstakes winners.

I do hope you found the feedback you received to be valuable, and if you are interested, I would be open to starting a dialogue with you and our resume consultant if you'd like additional assistance.

Please feel free to email me directly @ dalex@microsoft.com

Many thanks!

Alex, your absolutely correct.  By joining Monster jobs they have a variety of and tons of jobs to suite all interests.  I placed an ad there so I can also be of service to visitors.  At the same time took on to apply for jobs my self.  For those who are seriously looking.  Having a winning resume will take some time.  As a matter of fact when you volunteer to help other communities, those points ad up.  Wishing everyone the best in their online job search.  Have a great day everyone.
