One of the best parts of my job is getting to interact with Office Live users worldwide. And thanks to tools like Twitter, connecting with users gets easier all the time.

Last week I had the opportunity to connect with Maurice on Twitter.  Maurice is a high school student who’s done an amazing job creating technology videos that he then posts to his YouTube channel.  He mostly delivers reviews and set-up tips for video cards, headsets and stuff like that, but sometimes takes on different topics, too. His videos are strictly for the purposes of educating his audience—and I absolutely love his passion for technology!

Maurice recently posted this insightful review of Office Live Workspace beta.  What impressed me was how well he “got” the value of having an online place to store and edit documents. In his video he talks about how he and some classmates, while working on a social studies project, uploaded project files to the workspace he created. They could review and edit each others’ work in one place and see who had modified what along the way. It’s way easier than emailing documents back and forth, he says. Maurice says he mentioned Office Live Workspace to several teachers, too, who are now considering using it for posting and distributing class materials.

He has some good advice for Office Live Workspace developers, too. For starters, he says it’s important to keep it simple and easy-to-use. (I think he’s concerned about Microsoft’s fondness for adding features!) He also makes a case for making Office Live Workspace compatible with Google Chrome. I think he’s on the right track and admire his forward thinking.

If you haven’t checked out Office Live Workspace, take a look at Maurice’s YouTube video and then give it a spin yourself. You can sign up for free. Then, like Maurice, you can make your own YouTube video or tell us your thoughts by leaving a comment here.  You can even send me a Tweet sometime to @davidalexander_ on Twitter. We love getting candid viewpoints from Office Live users. It really helps us understand the right direction to take as we continue to build and evolve our products.

I've been using it, too and have really liked it so far.  I am working with it for personal documents and collaborating on work projects, too.  I'm also developing some training for clients to help them take advantage of the technology and to use it responsibly.

M. Rodrigues should be hired as a Microsoft Media community relations or marketing person, as he describes in detail how to use Microsoft Office Workspaces, in laymens terms. Kudos to to the Microsoft Team for creating this program, as well. I hope to become familiar with it, while I am in graduate school now.

For a writing group that is spread out, this is a very welcoming alternative to commuting, emailing and even Google's Docs.  (There are less windows that open up on you.)  There is nothing more confusing for me than a cluttered desktop  It is steamline and the pages have a professional "feel", and incourages professional documentation.  Very motivational.  Just don't change things too fast for proper adjustments.

Thanks for the comments.  It's great to get any/all feedback directly from our community. Mr. Rodriguez did a fantastic job on the video - and I appreciate his honest critique of where we've got it right and what we can do to improve.

Clanniec and ValJ, please feel free to email me directly if you'd be interested in also telling your story in video. I'm at: dalex@microsoft.com

I am a 68 year old retired BScEE and MBA guy who is now qualified to teach 8-12 Math in Texas.  When I was developing an Algebra 1 lesson plan I also began looking at Office Live Workspace.  It was like BAM!  What could be done in academic area was conceptually obvious.  There may be some temporary feature limitations that presently bound some ideas.  But, the path is clearly there.

I look forward to introducing this technology to my new associates - staff, teachers, students, & parents. A good netbook with WiFi and Cell Phone Data and this - I can go do anything anywhere!

This tool is not about a few documents being shared via email or some portable storage medium as an alternative.  This tool allows one to show organization of a suite of documents, such as in a daily lesson plan, over the course of weeks.  And, in each lesson plan document there is a need to link to other items that support the lesson - such as TI calculator lessons, or power point presentations, or homework documents, and so on.  I am checking on how to do some links, but the concept is clear.  So, its the organization of a suite of items that is so great about this tool and that organization can be conveyed to all users.

It is interesting how this application has the potential to offer some of the more basic functions of a suite such as BlackBoard to those who do not have such a resource available. For example, file sharing for group projects, central posting of documents, etc. I agree that there are many practical uses in regards to education.

Maurice has removed his YouTube video....what a shame I really wanted to view it.
