My name is Skip Chilcott and I started working on Office Live Workspace a few months ago. I’m really excited about the progress we’ve made this year–we’ve reached more than three million subscribers and we’re growing fast!

Part of having so many customers is getting a lot of feedback, which is great. And now, thanks to all that feedback, we’ve just made some improvements to the service that I am really pleased to share with you:

·         Folders –To simplify organization, now you can use folders to manage files within workspaces. We know many of you were creating new workspaces whenever you needed to group related documents, so we’re really happy about this feature.

·         Cut/Copy/Paste–Want to copy a document or file to another workspace? We’ve replaced the File/Move feature with Cut/Copy/Paste to make it even easier to manage your files.

·         More storage–We are increasing your storage capacity to 5GB. You keep telling us you need more so… ask no more!

·         Eight new languages – We are expanding to Eastern Europe with the addition of Hungarian, Romanian, Lithuanian, Serbian Latin, Ukrainian, Slovak, Latvian, and Slovenian. That brings our total to 28 languages in 52 countries!  Be sure to tell your friends, family, and colleagues around the globe to check out Office Live Workspace.

The new Folders and Cut/Copy/Paste features are available right now for you to try out. And, we’ll be rolling out the increased storage capacity to all customers over the course of the next several days.

What do you think? Do you have any unique stories to share about how you use Office Live Workspace? Leave a comment here, and stay tuned for some of mine soon.

For hankinsd - you can upload multiple documents to a folder by selecting all the files you wish to upload at the same time.  Use the CTRL key to select multiple files in the file section dialog box.  Also, we are using Silverlight technology for multiple file uploads so if you dont yet have Silverlight you can get it at the Windows Update site windowsupdate.microsoft.com

The New features are great. More space is even greater. Any chance we'll see Lookup Columns in lists? How about a lookup to another list? i.e. Lookup a contact for the owner in a task list.

This stuff is very cool. The geek in me is back.

Very disappointed that you removed the feature where I could open a wokrspace in Windows Explorer. That way I could drag and drop a whole nested folder full of flles.

Are you bringing it back? and when does workspace become a real feature?  Email me your answer - deepak@latticemedia.com

I can only support the requests for copying a folder tree from my PC. Re-creating the folder tree by hand is a pain!

For the moment I am just going to use it as a place to keep ZIP files.

Good start, now let's see you add the ability to download entire and multiple folders, or even better, entire workspaces.

Hi there -- I had seen the Folders feature a ouple of weeks ago (i.e. before your announcement), but I don't seem to be able to share a folder, only documents.

To be useful, the feature needs  to be able to share a flolder as well in its entirety, and to share the tree under the workspace ... unless I am doindg sth wrong or looking in the wrong place?

The ability to attach a stored file to a hotmail email message would be nice.

Hi Everyone, sorry for the long delay in responding to your comments.  I see lots of great suggestions and feature requests, keep them coming!

Regarding backing up files, copying entire folder trees, using w/ Windows Explorer, etc., unfortunatley Office Live Workspace was not designed to be an online backup system so we did not optimize for this scenario.  Feel free to use it this way, I just can not promise big improvements in online backup scenarios.

Regarding sharing of folders in addition to individual files and workspaces, we here you and thanks for the feedback.

Regards, Skip

Fantastic & much needed update.  But I do need to mention a few short comings that hopefully you are thinking about & addressing in your product roadmap:

1. Live/Office Live teams need a logical/unified roadmap.  I feel like we're being pulled in many directions with various offerings (OL Workspace, Live Mesh, Live SkyDrive and Live Sync).  Trying to make sense of it all...I would first unify Live Mesh/Sync and link Live SkyDrive to Live Mesh.  The hard work is merging OL Workspace with Live SkyDrive.  OL Workspace should take advantage of Live SkyDrive capability of giving every document a url.  OL Workspace should also take advantage of Live SkyDrive UI and it's unified look with the rest of Live.com.  Live SkyDrive should also take advantage of OL Workspace Document/List creation, Document preview capability, Comments and Activity List.  In the end, OL Workspace would no longer be an entry point on the web but a hidden back end component to Live SkyDrive.  The preview components could still be used to highlight the Office Live brand.

..assuming #1 then

2. Search: With the potential for storing thousands of documents..we need a search facility.  Ideally, I'd like to see 2 methods/places to search (from Live SkyDrive folder, from Windows Desktop Search).  We need to be able to search files/documents from Live.com.  I'd also like to see a connector for WDS to make it possible search from our desktops and have a federated search take place.  I could go on about this but I think you get the idea.

3. Is it possible to make Live SkyDrive part of the file system?  Currently it's confusing for consumers to see duplicative Open/SaveAs menu items that Office Live Connector installs.

It's nice to have some features on the task list , like reminders , recurring tasks , color coding tasks according to priority ( high , medium , low )

I would like to be able to assign a drive letter to the workspace and use it like anyother drive.

It's just not useful to me without the ability to upload folders. The stuff I would want to use and share is already in folders and I have other solutions that allow me to use it that way. I look forward to seeing that improvement down the line.

Testing the cut and paste to move a file between folders  After cutting the file the connection to server was lost before pasting it to the new folder. The file was lost -gone - completely. Glad this was only a test file. Will use copy and paste in future.

Paradoxically the limitations with folder trees mean I am more likely to use my workspace as an online backup rather than an online drive. This is because it would be a real pain to manually re-create all my folders, some of which are automatically created by applications. The most convenient solution seems to me to zip all the folders I need on my main PC, copy the zip file to my workspace, and unzip it on whatever computer I am using when I am not home. Now if only I could keep all my files on a "cloud" drive which just acts like an external storage device, that would be fantastic!

MarkSuggs wrote re: You asked for them - New features!

Folders feature seems more like a compromise - implemented half-way as a way to appease, but cut off at the knees with even more frustration... Only Owners can move files around?!? How is that collaborative? Owners should at least have the option to give Editors permission to move files. And folders can't be downloaded/uploaded? Just doesn't make any sense for my workflow. I hate to look the gift horse in the mouth, but it just seems like there isn't any usability testing going on out there in Redmond with realworld users.

I've have a question more then than a comment.  When will this space be expanded for other things such as using it for C++, C#, and Basic files.  Now I'm not saying that I need a built in compiler or a suit designed for it (Which both would be awesome) but I'm more talking about the ability to load these files up or create them without having to download them and rename them just to see them since they can ultimately be viewed in a text editor like notepad or word anyways?

Office Live is free and it has everything I need as a newbie.  I have learned a lot using Office Live.  It seems like every time I sign on there is something new, and easy to learn.  Thank you Microsoft for this program.  It is great.  I recommend it to all of my friends who are starting out in the internet business or just want a family page.  I do not use it for business so I am not familiar with the business section.   What I hear is that it is very useful for small to medium size businesses.  I use the websit, blogs,  and emails for my beginning marketing business online.

Great new features, thanks.

I think the TaskList Connect to Outlook needs improving.

The Owner, Status and Comments (all default fields in the Tasklist Workspace) are not syncing with the Outlook Tasklist.

I've even customized my view in Outlook Tasks to show Owner, Status and Comments but it always remains blank.

Also it would be nice if the Owner field wasn't just a text field but a drop down, listing the people in the Project Participants list.
