I have an opinion concerning attracting new customers. I too provide remote computer support however I do it for a fee. I believe that people just don't have the confidence to trust free computer advice without seeing some type of references. Posting a few letters of reference from reputable organizations and individuals gave my business a real boost. Also email is nice but there are remote desktop apps that allow you to view another computer and either communicate with the client through IM or if you use Skype you can speak directly to them while viewing their desktop in real-time.
Also I found that the forums are a good way to answer questions and build a reputation as a knowledgeable tech. I found that I picked up business from the non-tech forums like AARP and such where people will ask computer related questions and your answers stand out. Of course you may be able to grow your business there by offering free support.
Here is a link to my support page.
Good luck with your project,
D'Mack
