Where is my email?

Posted By: Barclay - MSFT on 03-06-2009

Before I answer this question for you, there are a few basic things you need to know that might help clarify which email accounts you can view using Office Live Small Business and which you can't. Then I'll explain how to view the account you are looking for.

I want to read my email through the Office Live Small Business inbox.

When you signed up for Office Live Small Business, we asked you to provide an email address. If you had already registered that email address as a Windows Live ID, we used that address to create your Office Live Small Business account. If you had not, we created a Windows Live ID account for you. That email address/Live ID combination accesses your primary (or "owner") account.

If the email address that you used to sign up for Office Live Small Business is either a Live Mail or Hotmail address, then that email account is available from within Office Live. If it is any other account (for example, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, etc.), it is not.

In summary, after signing in to Office Live Small Business using a Hotmail or Windows Live address, click Inbox to access your email. If you sign in using any other type of email address, you cannot access that email account from within Office Live Small Business.

Why doesn't my Office Live Small Business inbox work for accounts other than Hotmail or Windows Live? And how do I get to my email in any other account?

At this time, there are significant barriers for connecting to an account other than Hotmail or Windows Live, many of which have to do with your privacy and the security of your email account. Because of this, the only way for you to access an account other than a Hotmail or Windows Live account is to open a browser window, bring up the home page for your account provider, and sign in.

Can I read my Office Live Small Business email without signing into Office Live?

Yes, as long as it is associated with a Hotmail or Windows Live account, you can sign into your Office Live Small Business account at either www.hotmail.com or mail.live.com, using your Office Live account user name and password.

I bought a domain and created some email accounts using that domain name. How do I read the email that is sent to those accounts?

To get to the email accounts you have created, you must sign in to Office Live Small Business using those email addresses and passwords. That means, if you are signed in to Office Live, you have to sign out and then sign back in using the new email address. There is no way to aggregate all of the emails sent to your domain into one Inbox at this time.

I forgot the password for the email address I used to sign up for Office Live Small Business. How can reset it?

The owner of the Office Live Small Business account is the only person who can reset a password. Once the password has been reset, you can change it any time. For more information on resetting your password, read the "Update your e-mail account information" Help article.

Which brings us back to …

Where is my email?

You can read the email for any of your Office Live Small Business accounts by doing one of the following:

  • Sign in to Office Live Small Business using the user name and password of that account, and then on the Home page, in the E-mail section, click Inbox.
  • Sign in to either www.hotmail.com or mail.live.com using the user name and password for that account.

For more information on getting to your email, read the "Access your e-mail" Help article.

Did you try this?

1. Sign in to Office Live Small Business using the e-mail address and password for the e-mail account that you want to check.

2. On the Office Live Small Business Home page, at the top, click E-mail, and then, under Mail, click Inbox.

You can find more information about your e-mail Inbox here: office.microsoft.com/.../helppreview.aspx

I hope this helps.

Well, I do have an email, but why did it go away???

I see that for each of the individual emails I set up, I need to log in to each one to check the email sent to it, rather than being able to see them when I sign on to my master account.

Is this something that will change in the future?

I am running a small non profit and have set up accounts for various board members as well as a contact, fundraising and webmaster email.  I'd like to be able to read the contact, fundraising and webmaster emails with one log-in.

Just a suggestion as things go forward.

This email system is an absolute JOKE!!!  Why is it so difficult to pick- up my email?  So I try to add another account to my hotmail account in-box, hoping that it would turn up there.  They say that it is currently, "Waiting for verifiation"  which initially, I don't have a problem with.  But should it take two f'n days??

I am about ready to switch all my accounts to google!!

I have switched all of my domain and email info from godaddy.c om and created the email accounts to officelive but the email addresses that i created in officelive don't seem to be working.  If I try to send an email to one of the email accounts I get a message back saying the message was undeliverable.  If I try to login to officelive with one of the accounts, I get an error saying that the account doesn't exist.  What do I need to do?

I'm using MS Outlook. How do I get my email through outlook when using my domain email account? Web based emails are time consuming and inefficient. If I can't retrieve my domain email through outlook I never would have purchased a domain from Microsoft office live.

Hi Everyone,

I am new to MSLive biz community and just set up my website. I agree with the posts here in that the process to create and access domain name emails is very convoluted. I didnt know how to access my email  or where to go to access . Instruction above help some but not specific or detailed enough.

I finally figured this out on my own. YAY. Don't know if you've had this prob but hope it helps.   After I created the new domain email account outside of the original used to sign in initial website with, this is what I did and I  hope this helps.

When you create a new domain name email account in main website manager area, that is only 1 part of the process. You will have to sign out of your original email and sign in with the new domain email account.  Once you sign in with that it will look like you have not created an account because it will ask you to do another password, security question,  verify, etc.  and almost all the steps you needed when you created your original liveid (i don't use hotmail account, i have gmail so maybe a lil different for me) Do that and your account will be fully registered. So there is the account creation in your website manager, and then a part 2 step which is necessary registration in WindowsLiveID. Once I did that it allowed me to see the inbox for the new domain email that i created.  I hope this helps I sure as heck didn't know all this before.

@Efloyd:

Thank you. I stopped each time I got to the screen that made it appear that I had not created an account. I completed the form, accepted the terms, logged back in and instantly had more options for email.

thanks again!

I purchased a domain name and email address; and I created a password but still no email. In order to use my domain which does not end with the office.live.com, i will need to have outlook 2003 or 2007. Is this correct? Also, the password i created will not let me into the system. When i check the box, "forgot password", the system doesn't recognized my security answer. When i choose the second option to send to my email address, i cant get to it.

Hi JamesDuke

I had exactly the same problem getting into my new email address (except I didn't purchase it) but I think the same rule applies:

login to Windows Office Live with the email address & password you set it up with.  A screen of questions will appear asking you to input the email address again, the password, enter another new password & reconfirm it, chose a secret question, your postcode, location etc.  I know it seems bizare but you have to completed ALL the questions.  You will then get a message asking you to log in to Windows Office Live (again) & this time enter the same email address plus the new password you just changed the account to.

Fingers crossed for you - it just worked for me?!

I switched my webhost to officelive. I was able to setup two email addresses from the other host, but I can't setup mine and I'm the main one. The system says I have an email address, but when I try to log on it says need to add, then I try to add and get "Validation Error...this email already exists. Please type a different email address."

I just want my old email address to work, I own the domain.com. What is a *** to do?

I am wondering if Microsoft is finding Office Live to be a worthless venture, and are now dedicating fewer resources to support it?

I submitted a similar question, to which there is no response:  ask.officelive.com/.../18845.aspx

Actually, I was referred to the user forum.  I'm thinking, if a Microsoft technician can't figure it out, I'm left with the guesses of other people reporting the same problem?

I see Barclay has provided some thorough and knowledgeable responses in this thread.  Maybe Barclay has a higher skill level than my technician...Camille?  Is Barclay still around and can review my issue?

I set up my website using my own gmail account, but I have noticed that Msft automatically set up two email addresses for me for my website.  I found that I can log in to Hotmail/Windows Live Mail using that website-based account, which is quite nice.  I have therefore put that website-based email address on the the "contact us" page.  However, if any website visitor enters their own contact information on the "contact us" page, that mail goes to my home gmail account - the one I used to initially set up the web page with my domain (which I will understandably have to start paying for in March, 2001).

PaulineSavory wrote re: Where is my email?

Well, I have no idea where my emails sent from the contact us page go to! I originally set my website up logging in with my yahoo a/c but not with my actual yahoo password, I used a slightly different one. No emails from the website are going to my yahoo a.c so where the f**k are they?

I've added a link on my contact page so people can click on that to mail me but I still have this big problem of what email address the others go to and where are they?

Anyone got any ideas....

Absolutely agree that the process for accessing emails from your domain name is way to difficult.  I should be able to access them all from live account!  This sign in sign out sign in sign out crap is ridiculous!

I can't sign in with my domain email address. it won't let me fill in the required info unless I change my password. I don't have a clue how to check for mail at my domain email, because necessary information is not provided. This is supposed to work for small bussiness owners but it can't. Hi, I use "Windows Live Mail" for my Default email handler.  I love it because I can handle ALL (POP) accounts the I have and get/send the mail ALL at once, without having to select a different account and then Sign-In separately.  I'd rather do this than the hassle of trying to set up Multiple Email Accounts LEFT OUT ON SERVERS that ONLY handle Certain Email accounts.

Also, I LIE that I GET All my Emails and they are NOT Left out on Servers for Someone Else to possibly Aquire.

I just got onboard with OfficeLive for setting up a website and had some probs getting my Email set up to use with Windows Live.  LOL. I posted for some help after reading a number of solutions that I tried and couldn't seem to get to work.  After about 15 mins of tinkering myself, I got a Solution and posted my Exact Steps that worked for me.  Hopefully, it will work for may who may be running into the same issue.
